With the December 1 deadline to stop sending garbage from the city to Mandur looming large, the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) seems to be on a fast-track mode to meet it.
BBMP Commissioner M. Lakshminarayan told The Hindu that the quantum of garbage that is being sent to the Mandur landfill had been reduced. “We were initially sending 1,800 tonnes every day. Now, the BBMP sends only 1,200 tonnes. We are confident of meeting the deadline,” he said. He said that of four garbage processing units that were approved, work on two is progressing well. “One of the plants, with a capacity to process 500 tonnes a day, will be ready for commissioning by the end of the month,” he said.
A senior official said that the second plant will be ready by January.
Of the remaining two plants, one is coming up in Nelamangala taluk and will be ready in two years’ time. “Since this project is coming up on private land owned by the company, we have requested them to take up composting till the waste-to-energy unit is ready to be commissioned,” the official said.
The official added that the BBMP has doubled the processing capacity at Karnataka Compost Development Corporation (KCDC) from 300 tonnes a day. The focus is now on clearing the accumulated waste at KCDC. “Already, more than 75 per cent of accumulated waste is cleared. We have given the work order to set up two more units,” he said.
Mr. Lakshminarayan also said that the BBMP is also working towards setting up garbage processing plants in each Assembly constituency to ensure that the city’s waste is not dumped outside.
