Be prepared to spend two more days without water as the breach in a part of the raw water canal of Cauvery IV Stage could not be plugged by the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) workers on Thursday evening.
The BWSSB has roped in Madras Engineer Group (MEG) and Centre and Karnataka Power Corporation (KPC) for the emergency repair work.
“Pumping from all the four stages of the Cauvery is being stopped to undertake the repair as the main pipelines need to be dried up for the work. This will affect supply to the entire city for two more days,” a top BWSSB official said.
A part of the raw water canal between Shiva Balancing Reservoir (SBR) and Netkal Balancing Reservoir (NBR) had breached on Wednesday morning. Although repair work had started immediately and inflow was almost restored late on Wednesday evening, the canal breached again on Thursday morning, the official said.
Although pumping of nearly 370 million litres of water a day (mld) to areas fed by the fourth stage in West, East, South and South-East divisions was affected initially, all the four stages will stop functioning till the work is completed, the official said.
Frequent power disruptions in Tataguni had affected pumping from Cauvery 3{+r}{+d} Stage on Wednesday too. “This problem has left areas fed by the 3{+r}{+d} Stage, especially in the East division parched. The problem is likely to continue for another two days and even those areas fed by Cauvery 1{+s}{+t} and 2{+n}{+d} stages will not get water,” the official added.
