A sink hole large enough to swallow a two-wheeler greeted motorists on C.V. Raman Avenue and New BEL Road on Sunday morning. Water was gushing out on to the street.

Sadashivanagar traffic cops said that the road at the crucial junction suddenly caved in around 1.30 a.m. “It was clear that the sink hole was caused due to damage to a drinking water pipeline. However, it was 9.30 a.m. before the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) stopped supply on the line,” said E. Rajashekar, a cop with Sadashivanagar Traffic Police Station. It was only after that were barricades put up and the roads cleared for traffic.

The sink hole is over 10 feet deep and around eight feet wide. Work on closing it is expected to start on Sunday night. BWSSB officials have blamed the sink hole on a private firm which was laying Optic Fibre Cables (OFCs) on New BEL Road. “The firm was using trenchless technology. Workers were pushing the OFC pipe using machines when they punctured our water supply line. We are yet to identify the firm. We will lodge a complaint with the police after identifying the firm,” said B.S. Dalayath, executive engineer, North East Division, BWSSB.

The pipeline carries water from the pumping station at Malleswaram 18th Cross to R.T. Nagar, Sanjay Nagar and Hebbal. Water supply to these areas has been suspended till the sink hole is fixed and the pipeline replaced.
