Three months after the memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike and French company 3Wayste to set up a waste-to-energy plant in Chikkanagamangla near Anekal was signed, the environment technology company on Wednesday launched the technical feasibility study for the project.
Stating that this MoU was not something just on paper, but a programme which was moving forward at a fast pace, Alexandre Ziegler, Ambassador of France to India, who is on a two-day visit to the city, said, “We can expect results in the next seven months. The technology, which has been tested in France, can help deal with this crucial problem that the city faces: waste management.”
According to Robert Filipp, CEO of 3Wayste, the study will look at how to deploy the company’s patented waste-management technology under the local conditions in the city. “The technology can automatically separate mixed waste into biodegradable and non-biodegradable, and process 90% of the waste into energy, compost and industrial raw material. We will study the technology under the local condition and its environment and social impact,” said Mr. Filipp.
For the project, the BBMP will hand over 300 tonnes of mixed waste to the company, and another 200 tonnes will be sourced by the company from bulk generators.
“The company will invest ₹250 crore in the project, and it has been given a 30-year lease for the 15-acre land in Chikkanagamangla, following which it will be handed over to the BBMP,” said Sarfaraj Khan, Joint Commissioner, Health and Solid Waste Management, BBMP.
Once commissioned, the plant can generate 7MW of power per day, which will be added to the grid.
Mayor R. Sampath Raj and Deputy Mayor Padmavathi Narasimhamurthy were present at the launch.
