Like all lung spaces, Cubbon Park, one of the city’s most prominent ones, faces the twin hazards of pollution and intrusion.
To highlight this, a cleanup drive was organised on Monday by the Cubbon Park Walkers’ Association that was formed in February with the primary objective of creating awareness against littering and contaminating the park premises.
The drive saw participation of personalities such as film director Nagathihalli Chandrashekhar and actor Bhavana, besides 50 association members who diligently cleared the litter.
“The weekend sees a large influx of people from all over the city who visit the park for fresh air. However, the park has turned into a dumping ground. Plastic bottles, wrappers of processed food, cups, containers and all sorts of waste are strewn all over the park. It is not a pleasant sight in the morning. The negligent and callous attitude of the park authorities makes the situation worse. This drive is being organised to bring to the notice of the Horticulture Department the plight of the park,” said association president S. Umesh.
Capt. G.R. Gopinath, association member and founder of Air Deccan, said that though there are rules to penalise litterbugs, they are not implemented.
“Our main aim is to energise park authorities to discharge their duties and ensure that the park is kept clean and tidy,” he said.
The drive emphasised the need to maintain a clean, green, plastics-free park environment, creating civic awareness among Bangaloreans and restoring the city’s green splendour.
