Various hospitals, non-governmental organisations and pharmaceutical companies organised walkathons, rallies, awareness programmes, street plays and the like to mark World Diabetes Day here on Sunday.
Flagging off the Rotary Novo Nordisk Diabetic Walk at Cubbon Park, Home and Transport Minister R. Ashok said only increased awareness about the ill-effects of diabetes can help prevent people falling prey to the disorder.
He said the changing lifestyle had been responsible for more people suffering from diabetes.
Novo Nordisk India Managing Director Melvin D'souza said the company had organised similar walks across 50 cities in the country to educate about five lakh people.
If people do not change their lifestyle, the country will have the highest number of people with diabetes by 2030, he cautioned.
The Karnataka Institute of Diabetology organised a street play at the Government High School, Sarakki.
The play, titled “Madhumehaasura” (the demon called diabetes), made an attempt to spread the message through simple terms to the viewers.
The Vagus Hospital, Malleswaram, organised a free diabetes screening camp on its premises.
The Columbia Asia Hospital, Yeshwanthpur, organised a multi-organ risk assessment programme where leading doctors and prominent citizens discussed the increasing incidence of multi-organ complications of diabetes.
The hospital launched a customised diabetes management programme.
The Bangalore Diabetes Hospital, Vasanthanagar, organised a walkathon.
This was followed by magic shows, mimicry, a drawing competition on “My Life with Diabetes” and an awareness programme for 150 children with Type 1 diabetes.
