K. Vishwanath, acclaimed Telugu filmmaker and actor, known for directing landmark moviessuch as Shankarabharanam and Sagara Sangamam which showcased Carnatic music and south Indian dance, is opposed to remaking movies in other languages.
“Though I had offers to remake Sirisirmuvva , I refused them all. How can any one remake Maya Bazar ? Swati Muthyam was remade in Kannada. But the producer did not have the courtesy to intimate me. Meena, the female lead in the film, informed me about it,” he said at an interaction with the media on Sunday on the sidelines of Fifth Bangalore International Film Festival (BIFFes).
His Sagara Sangamam was screened at BIFFes on Sunday. “I watched my film after nearly two decades as an ordinary viewer and felt that the director has done a good job,” Mr. Vishwanath said.
Intution
Noting that his films were the product of his “intuition”, he said he could not explain how he dealt with music and dance in movies as he did not have any expertise in these fields. His association with legends such as K.V. Mahadevan, Ilaiyaraja, Hariprasad Chourasia, Kelucharan Mohapatra and Sharon Loven, helped him understand the nuances of music and dance. “It is really a challenge to make films based on music,” Mr. Vishwanath said.
When asked whether he had left anything unexplored, the veteran filmmaker said, “A lot is still to be done on music and dance”.
