A call centre employee committed suicide over a trivial family dispute at her house in Banasawadi on Sunday night.

The deceased Suma Mercy (28) from Dharwad was married to her colleague Kiran Mercy four years ago and was working in the same call centre. The couple had a two-year-old son.

Suma and Kiran were planning to go on a holiday next weekend and she proposed to take along two children of Kiran’s elder sister with them, to which Kiran’s mother reportedly objected. This led to a bitter tiff between Suma and her mother-in-law on Sunday night when she stormed out of the hall and locked herself up in her bedroom. When she did not respond to repeated calls, her husband Kiran peeped in through the bedroom window and saw her hanging from the ceiling fan. He broke open the door and retrieved the body.

Suma’s parents in their statement to the tahsildar have said that she was not harassed by her in-laws or husband and blamed her short temper for the sad turn of events.

Banasawadi police have registered a case.
