'I wish we had stayed back in Poland,' says tourist Kami Klebanski who was injured in the Bangalore-Ernakulam train accident in Bangalore on Friday.

What was meant to be a romantic Valentine’s Day outing in God’s own country for the Polish couple, turned out to be tragic with the derailment of the train. Szczecin-based couple Kamil K. Klebanski (33), working for Poland government, and Ola Ryzczak (25), a graphic designer, chose to tour India from a list of destinations. While Mr. Klebanski escaped with minor injuries, his girlfriend is severely injured and underwent a surgery on Friday and may have to get her leg amputated.

Sitting on the hospital bed, a distraught Kamil said: “I suddenly saw a wall come in front of me,” explaining how the D9 coach pierced into the D8 coach. Although he was rescued an hour after the incident, Ola was stuck in between and rescued later. He said that he protested and wanted to get out only after Ola was rescued but the rescue team took him to a private hospital.

“We had come for a Valentine’s Day trip and Ola particularly insisted that we come to India. I wish we had stayed back in Poland,” he said as tears rolled down his eyes.
