VC’s condition to admit private candidates

Bangalore University (BU) Vice-Chancellor B. Thimme Gowda on Monday said the varsity would allow admission of students who had cleared the II Pre University (PU) exams as private candidates “if the government takes accountability”.

The varsity’s academic council had recently decided to not consider admissions of students who had passed the qualifying exam as private candidates. However, the decision was made nearly two months after classes had begun, leaving the students and colleges in a fix.

Anxious students gathered at the Central College campus – the venue of the meeting of BU’s syndicate on Monday, awaiting a decision on their future. Prof. Gowda said the rule will be made more stringent “the next year”.

Taking exception, Legislative Council Deputy Chairman Puttanna expressed concern that such a measure would affect the future of nearly 25,000 students in BU jurisdiction.
