A procession with the portrait of Tipu Sultan on a horse drawn carriage was taken out from the Tipu Sultan’s Palace on Wednesday to mark the 263 birth anniversary of the former ruler of Mysore. The procession came with a call to install his statue in Delhi and bring back his possessions lying abroad.

Several foreigners, who were visiting the palace were also part of the celebrations that had been organised by Kannada Vatal Paksha leader Vatal Nagaraj, who demanded installation of Tipu’s statue in front of Parliament House in Delhi.

“The state legislature must pass a resolution seeking installation of Tipu’s statue in Delhi. Besides, the Union Government should make efforts to bring back his possessions including swords and other personal belongings that are now falling into private hands. They can be preserved by the Archaeology Department,” Mr. Nagraj said.

Besides, Srirangapatna from where he ruled and Devanahalli where he was born should be developed to make them important tourist destinations, he said, adding that Tipu’s birthday should be declared as a national festival.
