“Bangalore University will be trifurcated this year,” said Higher Education Minister T.B. Jayachandra, shortly after participating in the 51st convocation of the varsity here on Tuesday, signalling that it could have well been the last convocation of a united BU.

“The Special Officers to the two new universities have also been named. Mangalore University Registrar T.D. Kemparaju has been appointed to the Bangalore North University, while S. Japhet, professor from the National Law School of India University, Bengaluru, has been appointed to the Bangalore Central University,” he said, speaking to reporters after the convocation ceremony.

The convocation saw 216 gold medallists and 91 first rank holders take home prizes, medals and certificates from All India Council for Technical Education chairman Anil Dattatraya Sahasrabudhe and Bangalore University Vice-Chancellor B. Thimme Gowda, among others. A total of 44,822 students were eligible to graduate.

BU live

The annual event was streamed live for the first time on the varsity’s own “BU Live” facility on its website managed partly by electronic media students of Bangalore University.
