Unfazed by the unanimous resolution passed by the Legislative Assembly on Tuesday requesting him to postpone urban local body elections, and the subsequent demand by MLAs, cutting across party lines, to summon him to the House for a reprimand, State Election Commissioner (SEC) C.R. Chikkamath has said the elections will go on as planned.

Speaking to presspersons on Wednesday after explaining his position to Speaker K.G. Bopaiah in his chamber, where Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar was present, Mr. Chikkamath said he would abide by the Supreme Court directions and hold elections.

It was the “bounden duty” of the State government to cooperate and provide the staff required for holding elections, he said.

Mr. Chikkamath said he had written to deputy commissioners and political parties to provide the reservation list according to which the 2007 urban local body elections were held.
