In a first for any State, Karnataka’s Education Department has created a unique code for every child in the schooling system and a centralised database that will allow for tracking his or her educational record till completion of standard 10.
Launching the website ‘Hejje Gurutu’ on Wednesday, Primary and Secondary Education Minister Vishweshwara Hegde Kageri said 98.48 lakh children currently studying in Karnataka, both in private and government schools, would be part of the database uploaded on the website.
Aadhaar integration
Mr. Kageri said the unique code would be integrated with the Aadhaar platform once the latter was fully operational.
“We have created our own system now because we cannot wait indefinitely for Aadhaar to be fully functional,” he said.
The database will not only help prevent dropouts, but also aid dissemination of various welfare schemes across the State such as midday meal and student scholarship programmes, said the Minister. Each student will be identified by a 17-digit code, which will include a specific code for the child’s school and year of enrolment.
The database will have information about the child under 29 heads, including date of birth, medium of instruction, attendance, whether or he/she comes under any reservation, whether he/she is homeless, and so on.
The project was started in July 2012 when the software was locally created to upload information and given to districts.
The information is now online, which will be verified for errors till February 10. Parents, teachers and general public can intimate the Block Education Officer of any errors in this period. The finalised information will be online by March 5.
D.Ed. syllabus
Mr. Kageri said the syllabus for D.Ed. was being overhauled under the chairmanship of K.S. Sameer Simha, under the guidance of 50 educational experts.
