An undertrial allegedly committed suicide by hanging at the high security Parappana Agrahara central jail due to alleged harassment from prison staff in the early hours of Wednesday.

The victim was identified as Mani Varma alias Mani (51) from Srinagar in Bangalore. According to the police, Mani was found hanging to the grill of a window in the bathroom close to barrack number seven with a towel. The incident came to light when other undertrials woke up in the morning and went to use the bathroom and alerted the security staff.

Mani was rushed to the jail hospital before being shifted to Victoria Hospital where the doctors declared him brought dead.

Mani was allegedly involved in the murder of a homemaker for gain in Hanumanthnagar police limits. He was arrested and remanded in judicial custody on August 22, 2011.

While the prison staff maintained that Mani was depressed over the possibility of his conviction in the case and this could be the reason behind his extreme step, his family members alleged that Mani was beaten up by the prison staff on Tuesday over a trivial row. He even shared this incident with his fellow inmates and was depressed.

In another incident, a 60-year-old convict, who was undergoing life imprisonment, died in the prison hospital on Tuesday evening, a day prior to the start of his parole for treatment of his ailment.

G. Karthik was suffering from throat cancer and was treated in Kidwai memorial hospital and Victoria Hospital earlier. His family wanted to get him better treatment and had applied for parole. He was planning to get out of the jail on parole on Wednesday for better medical attention when he died on Tuesday evening.
