Two engineers have been suspended, while a executive engineer has been issued a show-cause notice for their failure to clear garbage in Bengaluru south where, over the past week, the number of black spots and mounds of uncleared garbage have been increasing.

Residents, who have had to put up with foul smell emanating from the festering waste, on Monday poured out their woes to city in-charge Minister Ramalinga Reddy, who inspected several areas accompanied by Mayor B.N. Manjunath Reddy and others.

Upset with the poor response from officials and mounds of waste, the Minister directed the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) Commissioner G. Kumar Naik to suspend Assistant Engineer Jayashankar, Assistant Executive Engineer Bhaskar, and issue a show cause notice to Executive Engineer B.R. Mudduraj, besides sternly warning jurisdictional Chief Engineer P.S. Ramesh.

Apart from directing the Commissioner to levy a Rs. 50,000 fine on garbage contractor Channakeshava, he instructed the zonal commissioner to direct the garbage contractors to clear the accumulated waste immediately.

The other major issue that residents complained about was the poor condition of footpaths. They said that with the footpaths being encroached, cobblestones missing and uneven surface, pedestrians were forced to vie for space with motorists.

With the electrical crematorium at Banashankari in dire need of maintenance, Mr. Reddy asked the engineers concerned to prepare an estimate, following which he would sanction funds for the same under the Nagarottana scheme.
