Movement of trains was affected after coupled locos (engines) meant for hauling two trains derailed at the Bangalore City Railway Station on Sunday morning. Since November, this is the third such incident on the City railway station premises.
The incident occurred after the loco pilot of the coupled loco reportedly overshot the signal and moved towards Platform 6 during shunting. The locos were to haul Train no. 12028 Bangalore-Chennai Shatabdi and Train no. 12608 Bangalore-Chennai Lalbagh Express scheduled to depart Bangalore City at 6 a.m. and 6.30 p.m. respectively, according to railway officials.
While all wheels of the front loco derailed, the rear loco’s right wheels derailed. The derailment resulted in delay in arrival and departure of trains. Chennai-Mysore Kaveri Express arrived on Platform no. 6 instead of platform no. 5. The train’s departure was delayed by over one-and-a-half hours. The Bangalore-Chennai Shatabdi scheduled to leave from Platform no. 6 was shifted to platform no. 1, and its departure was delayed by over 15 minutes, officials said.
Divisional Railway Manager A.K. Agarwal told The Hindu that the derailment happened because of the fault of the loco pilot against whom action was being initiated.
Earlier incidents
Two coaches of Bangalore City-Hazrat Nizamuddin Rajdhani Express on November 24 derailed and crashed through the compound wall of the Mahatma Gandhi Railway Colony. Action was taken against the loco pilot, shunting supervisor and shunting engineer, Mr. Agarwal said. In December, the loco of Bangalore-Chennai Shatabdi derailed while entering platform 6, officials said.
