Two students drowned in Basavanapura lake at Gottigere on Bannerghatta Road when they went for a swim on Monday. The Fire and Emergency Services personnel recovered the bodies after a three-and-a-half hour search operation.

The deceased are Karan (14) and Somashekar (12), residents of Basavanapura and studying in private schools in the city. Their parents hail from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh and work as daily wage labourers.

The police said that the incident took place around 12.30 p.m. when four students got into the lake and started swimming. After a while Karan and Somashekar started drowning. Their friends, Suresh and his younger brother, noticed it and swam out and ran away from the scene. A passer-by who noticed the incident alerted the Fire officials.

Though there is fencing around the lake it is not maintained well. The Hulimavu police have taken up a case and are investigating.
