Following allegations of financial irregularities, and corruption in appointments to key posts in Visvesvaraya Technological University, Belagavi, and Karnataka State Open University, Mysuru, the Governor and Chancellor Vajubhai Rudabhai Vala has constituted two committees to conduct inquiries.
Sources in Raj Bhavan said that two separate orders were issued. The committee to look into the financial and academic affairs of VTU would be headed by former judge, High Court of Karnataka Ajith Gunjal, while the allegations against KSOU will be probed by K.S. Bhaktavatsala. “The committees have been asked to give a report within a fortnight,” the source said.
The allegations were against H. Maheshappa, VTU VC, and K.S. Rangappa, former KSOU VC (at present the VC of University of Mysore).
A preliminary report into allegations of irregularities in the recruitment process of VTU had indicted the varsity for “taking advantage of the government’s silence”. The report prepared by the then Additional Chief Secretary G.V. Krishna Rau in October 2014 stated that the process of recruitment to 168 teaching posts was “a fit case to be ordered for an investigation”.
The former VTU VC K. Balaveera Reddy had also alleged mishandling of the corpus fund of VTU.
