Two construction workers died and six suffered injuries when a portion of a wall of a water tank under construction collapsed on them on the military school campus near Anepalya on Hosur Road on Friday.

The incident occurred at around 2.30 p.m. when a group of eight construction workers were at work on the Corps of Military Police Centre and School campus.

The Army personnel managed to rescue four workers trapped under the debris before the Fire and Emergency Services personnel reached the spot.

They were later shifted to a private hospital where 19-year-old Prem and 31-year-old Thippeswamy succumbed to their injuries.

Trapped

According to Fire and Emergency Services officials, six workers were trapped under the debris. Two of them were critical when rescued and they succumbed to their injuries in the hospital later, they said.

The other four workers were taken to two hospitals for treatment. Construction supervisor B.H. Shiva Venkatarama (49) was also among the injured. He has suffered multiple fractures of his right leg. Obalesh (23), another worker, is being treated for fracture in the neck, it is said.

Sharadamma, a worker at the site, said the incident occurred when the workers were just about to get down from the top for lunch. “Suddenly, we heard a crack and the wall came crashing down on the workers below. Even before we realised what was happening, we were all covered in dust,” she said.

The other workers injured are Ravi (33), Mehboob (45), Rafeeq (22) and Rajesh. The condition of Rafeeq is said to be critical while Rajesh, who was admitted to Lady Curzon and Bowring Hospital, was discharged after treatment.

Speaking to The Hindu , a Defence Ministry spokesperson confirmed the death of two workers. “Two out of the eight workers died and three are severely injured. The injured admitted to a private hospital are said to be out of danger, while the remaining have been discharged after treatment,” the spokesperson said.

The civil work contract for the tank construction was given to Lal Construction Pvt. Ltd. and an inquiry has been initiated, sources said. They said that the workers were not given any safety equipment at the site. The Ashoknagar police have taken up a case of negligence against the contract who is absconding.
