A boy from Bangalore drowned while swimming near Chunchi Falls on Kanakapura Road on Saturday afternoon.

The deceased, Michael Cherian (20), resident of Banaswadi, was a second year B.Com student of CMR College. He had gone on a picnic with three friends on Saturday. While the four were swimming, Michael suddenly screamed out as he was unable to stay afloat due to the strong current, police said quoting his friends.

Even as others rushed to his rescue, Michael drowned. When his friends could not locate him, they alerted locals and Michael’s family. Fire and Emergency Services Department personnel could not recover his body till night.

The rescue operations resumed on Sunday morning and Michael’s body was retrieved by afternoon.

Michael was the son of Biju Cherian, a marketing executive.

Family sources told the police that Michael was proficient in swimming. He had celebrated his birthday just a week ago.

The Sathanur police, who are investigating the case, said that such incidents had happened earlier near the falls. Despite warnings, many still try to swim in the water near the base of the falls, they added.

In another incident, a 13-year-old boy died after drowning in a pond near a field off Chikkatumkur road in Doddaballapur rural police limits on Sunday afternoon.

The deceased has been identified as Zaheer, resident of Palanajogihalli, who was studying in the eighth standard in the local government school. As it was a holiday, Zaheer had gone along with his friends to the pond but was unable to remain afloat. His friends were frightened and ran away from the pond to inform their parents. The family then alerted the police who recovered Zaheer’s body from the pond.
