Two children, including a one-year-old, toddler died in a road mishap by speeding private bus, just a few metres away from Ulsoor Gate police station in Bengaluru on Sunday evening.

The deceased have been identified as Shama Anjum (13) and her one-year-old sister Ayam. Shama Anjum was carrying the toddler Ayam and riding pillion with her step-mother Ameena (25) who was riding a scooter when the accident occurred. The family lived in Siddapura near Lal Bagh and Ameena was travelling to Majestic to meet her husband Salauddin Babu, a sunglass vendor at the Kempegowda Bus Stand.

Shama Anjum was also holding an umbrella to protect the three from the lashing rains. When Ameena slowed down the scooter to manoeuvre a pot-hole, a speeding private bus rammed into the scooter from behind.

Ameena fell over to the right side while the children fell to the left. Shama Anjum was crushed under the wheels of the bus, killing her on-the-spot. Due to the impact of the accident, the baby, Ayam was thrown up in the air and she fell onto the stone pavement. She suffered severe head injury rushed to a nearby private hospital. She was later shifted to Manipal Hospital where she was died on Sunday night.

Salauddin Babu was inconsolable and was unable to speak. “I have lost both my daughters. I advised my wife not to bring the toddler on a scooter when it was cloudy. But she did not heed to my words and we have lost her now,” he broke down.

Ulsoor Gate Traffic police rushed to the spot and helped the victims and arrested the driver of the private bus attached to Kalleshwara Travels. The arrested has been identified as Mohammed Yusuf, who was on his way to Majestic from Kalasipalya.
