The City Railway police have arrested two persons on Monday and recovered gold valuables worth ₹ 24.2 lakh from them.
The duo, identified as S. Venkatesh (50) and M. Pandiyan (30), hail from Trichy in Tamil Nadu. They travelled to the city in Mailaduturai Express and alighted at the Bengaluru Cantonment Railway station. They were trying to sneak out when the alert police caught them and recovered 2.3 kg of gold jewels.
Superintendent of Police (Railways) N. Chaitra said that the duo is part of a gold smuggling racket prevalent in the two States.
Based on credible information, a special team of police had been formed to conduct random checks at the station.
The two have been take into custody to ascertain the source of the valuables, she said.
