Is there any hope of making our city roads free from shrill and banned horns?
Following a High Court ruling, the Transport Department cracked down on vehicles with shrill air horns. But, officials say they are helpless when it comes to stopping the sale of such horns. Six months ago, the department raided shops in J.C. Road three times for selling air horns.
Joint Commissioner for Transport Narendra Holkar, who heads the enforcement team, said, “We can take action against drivers for using shrill horns. But, we can’t enter shops and check their inventories for horns.”
The department is short staffed and monitoring such vehicles continuously has become a challenge. According to officials, private luxury buses deployed by corporate companies to ferry their employees use air horns as soon as they exit city limits and remove them while entering the city. “This means that there is some awareness against using such horns within city limits,” he said. But there is a long way to go before shrill horns are completely stopped.
