The Karnataka High Court on Wednesday ordered issue of notice to the State Government on a petition questioning the Government's decision to hand over 123 acres of land of Nirashritara Parihara Kendra (commonly known as Beggars' Home) to the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) for commercial development.
A Division Bench comprising Chief Justice J.S. Khehar and Justice A.S. Bopanna passed the order in a public interest litigation filed by the Rashtrothan Sankalp, a registered trust.
The trust has pointed out that the Government had spent crores of public money for providing infrastructure to the Nirashritara Parihara Kendra on Magadi Road, which would go waste if the buildings are demolished to pave the way for construction of a convention centre, public hospital and a park.
The Government issued an order in May 2010 to transfer 123 acres of land to the BDA.
The petitioner has also complained that the civic authorities are not transferring crores of rupees collected by way of the Beggary Cess under the Karnataka Prohibition of Beggary Act 1975 to the Nirashritara Parihara Kendra, managed by the Social Welfare Department.
