Police Commissioner T. Suneel Kumar, on Thursday released stickers and pamphlets to spread awareness on a new initiative to combat the growing drug menace in the city: a toll-free number – 1908 – which citizens can use to share information with the police.

Reiterating the gravity of drug-related crimes, Mr. Kumar said that narcotics cultivation, possession, manufacture, transport, trade, consumption, enticing, and providing shelter and assistance to any such activities are serious offences punishable under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act.

“The sale of tobacco or narcotic substances to under-aged persons (below 18 years) or selling to people in the vicinity of educational institutions and places of worship are serious offences,” he said.

He appealed to citizens to call 1908 to share any information on drugs or related issues. He assured that the informant’s identities will be kept confidential.
