A wedding function turned tragic for parents of a two-year-old when she was run over by a goods vehicle while she was playing in front of the marriage hall in Adugodi on Tuesday evening.

Sumaiya was the only child of Sheikh Farid and Nazreen Taj.

The couple had come to attend their neighbour’s wedding in Rajendranagar 9th Main. While they were busy chatting inside the hall with the guests, Sumaiya slipped outside to play along with other children.

A cargo vehicle came to the venue to make some deliveries and accidentally knocked down Sumaiya.

However, seeing there were no adults around, the driver quietly left the scene. The toddler was rushed to hospital with serious head injuries where she was pronounced dead.

When the Adugodi police questioned Sumaiya’s playmates, they described what happened.

The police tracked down the vehicle, the driver of which confessed that he had fled fearing dire consequences.
