A two-year-old boy was charred to death in a kitchen fire that destroyed a thatched hut near Hosabande in Bagalur police station limits on Tuesday morning.

The victim is Chetan, son of Appanna, a tractor driver, and Pushpavathi, a manual labourer.

Bagalur police said that the family, from Yadgir, was living in a thatched hut. On Tuesday morning, Chetan’s parents were away at work while a relative, Chandravva (65), was caring for four of Chetan’s siblings and cousins.

The elderly lady was cooking when fire broke out accidentally, destroying the highly inflammable hut.

While Chandravva managed to rescue Dileep Kumar (9), Bhagyashree (3) and Divya (2), she could not reach Chetan, who was asleep, in the nick of time. Fire officials received a call around 10.50 a.m. following which two fire tenders were despatched to the spot. They said more than 50 such families live in such huts in the area.

The police have registered a case.
