May 26, 2014 11:37 pm | Updated 11:37 pm IST - Bangalore:

Three waste processing plants will be set up on the outskirts of the city to reduce the pressure on the existing landfills.

Announcing this here on Monday, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said one plant would come up at Doddaballapur, while the other two would be set near Magadi Road.

Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) Commissioner M. Lakshminarayana said the cost of setting up each plant was around Rs. 150 crore. The three processing plants are expected to complement the 16 biomethanisation plants that will come up in the city.

To a question about the protests by Mandur residents against the dumping of garbage at the landfill, the Commissioner said a meeting would be held on Thursday with residents and Arvind Limbavali, MLA.. The residents have set a deadline of June 1 to stop dumping waste at the landfill.
