A couple and their two daughters consumed poison in Doddaballapur town on Sunday.

While the couple and their 19-year-old daughter died, the younger daughter, Lakshmi (13), is battling for her life in Victoria Hospital.

The dead are Srinivasa (52) and his wife, Nirmala (48) and Bhavani (19).

Srinivas was working in a private factory.

The tragedy came to light when neighbours, who saw no one had opened the door since morning, went to see. They broke in, found the family lying unconscious and called the police.

The four were taken to Doddaballapur Government Hospital where the couple was pronounced dead.

The two girls were taken to Victoria Hospital where Bhavani died.

The police suspected that the couple might have fed the poison — added to tomato juice — to the children before drinking it themselves.

“We have taken up a case of murder and suicide and are trying to ascertain the reason for it,” the police said.
