Close on the heels of the rape of an eight-year-old girl, another case of sexual assault on a child came to light on Monday night at Nehrupuram.

Three men lured a nine-year-old girl, who was returning from a madrasa around 6 p.m., to a deserted house and tried to rape her. They fled away when she started screaming. The terrified child, on reaching home, told her parents about it and her father immediately contacted the Bharatinagar police.

The girl has bite marks on her and was taken for a medical exam.

The police detained a suspect, Shaikh Amin, a salesman at a retail garment store. They are looking for the other two.

Suspects nabbed

The police arrested Azmathullah (24) and Sultan (20) in connection with the murder of Raghu alias Girish Kumar that took place in Vijayanagar last Wednesday. Police are also looking for other suspects.

The victim, between 35 and 40, died when a gang attacked him with lethal weapons.

The police said the main accused, Ravi alias Vali, and Raghu were doing time in the Central Jail when Raghu badgered Ravi to arrange for money from his family. Even after Ravi was released from prison, Raghu continued to threaten him for the money.

Angered by this, Ravi allegedly plotted with his associates to bump off Raghu, a career criminal, after his release.

The police seized a machete, believed to be the murder weapon, and are looking for Ravi, Tabrez, Vishwa, Vinoda and Girish who are absconding.

Hangs herself

A young mother hanged herself at her home in Parappana Agrahara police limits on Monday evening.

Police said Manju (27), a resident of Naganathpura, was alone at her home. Her husband Venugopal, a chef in Sarjapura, was away at work and her mother-in-law had taken their one-year-old baby outside.

Police are yet to determine why Manju ended her life.
