Three labourers died of asphyxiation while cleaning a sewage treatment plant at an apartment in Somasundarapalya, H.S.R. Layout, on Sunday morning.

The trio - identified as Srinivas, Ramesh and Mahadevappa - were asked by the apartment management to clean it since it was clogged.

According to the Bandepalya police, who are currently camping in the area to monitor the law and order situation, the three labourers entered the tank around 10.30 a.m. When the residents noticed no movement inside the tank nearly two hours later, they alerted the fire control and police.

The personnel from the Fire and Emergency Services rushed to the spot and rushed the three labourers to St. John’s Hospital. While Mahadevappa reportedly had died, the other two - Srinivas and Ramesh - died at the hospital.

Police said the victims, who are employed by a private contractor, came to the apartment every month to clean the STP. The three did not have any safety equipment. The police added that the apartment management should have ideally approached the Bengaluru Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) to clean the STP.
