Two newborns were found abandoned in Bowring and Vani Vilas hospitals in the city in the last couple of weeks.

The Bosco Child Helpline, which has taken the abandoned babies under its care, is attempting to trace the parents of the babies.

The Bosco Child Helpline sources told The Hindu that a baby girl was found in the last week of December on the second floor of the Vani Vilas Hospital, dumped near the stairs, wrapped in a gunny bag.

The other baby, a boy, had no claimants after his mother died in Bowring Hospital soon after delivery. The baby’s mother, whose name is yet to be ascertained, was brought to Bowring Hospital by one of her husband’s friends. The woman, however, died soon after delivery due to complications. The doctors are trying in vain to contact the woman’s family.

At the time of admitting her to the hospital, the man told the doctors that the woman and her husband were from north India and had come to the city in search of a livelihood. They were apparently working as construction labourers and living on the roadside for the last few months. Recently, the woman’s husband went to his native place, leaving his wife under the care of his friend, Bosco Child Helpline sources said. “When the woman developed complications, the man admitted her to the hospital, and left.”

“After waiting for a few days, the hospital authorities informed the police, who in turn alerted the child helpline, who rushed to the spot and took the child to Shishu Mandir on January 9,” sources added.

“We suspect that the husband, who was aware of his wife’s condition, did not turn up deliberately due to financial constrains, executive director of Bosco Child Helpline Fr. P.S. George told The Hindu . The Bosco helpline volunteers are trying to trace the parents of the baby boy, but until then, the baby will be under the care of the Shishu Mandir, he said.

Yet another

Another newborn girl was found abandoned on the pavement on Thursday evening. She was wrapped in a floor mat near Gnanodaya School in Shankarapuram. Passers-by informed the police. The Bosco Child Helpline was contacted and the baby was taken to Shishu Mandir.
