Investigations so far have revealed that Dominic Selvaraj, the ATM van driver who fled with a vehicle carrying Rs. 1.3 crore in cash, and his wife, Evelyn Mary Roy, had planned the theft well in advance. They had even disposed their household articles days before the actual plan was executed.
The couple planned to repay debts and start a life afresh with the help of their relatives.
However, their plan did not work as the police started tracking phones of their relatives and friends and warned them of action, if they were found to be helping Dominic and Evelyn.
Dominic, who worked as a driver on contract basis for cash management service provider company Logicash, drove away with the cash on November 23 from Kempe Gowda Road when the vehicle was stopped in front of Bank of India branch. The couple travelled from Shanti Nagar bus stand to Dominic’s relative’s house in Coimbatore, but they refused to help him. Disappointed by this, the couple went to Thrissur where they stayed for a day in a church before heading to Evelyn’s aunt’s house at Vijayawada. When Evelyn’s relatives too refused to help her and advised her to surrender, the couple returned to Banasawadi where they contacted Nancy, an advocate. The couple initially asked her advise on how to get bail. But, Ms. Nancy asked Evelyn to surrender with Rs 92.08 lakh in cash. Dominic went to Salem with the remaining money to attend some unfinished business, a senior police officer said.
