Opposition BJP and Congress members nearly came to blows in the Assembly on Tuesday during the course of a discussion on the alleged suicide of Deputy Superintendent of Police M.K. Ganapathy.

Speaker K.B. Koliwad had to summon marshals, when incensed BJP members stormed into the well of the House over a remark made by Minister for Forests B. Ramanath Rai and rushed towards his seat.

Slogans raised

Ministers and Congress members literally surrounded Mr. Rai to “protect” him from the Opposition members. Dubbing the move of the Minister as “rowdyism”, BJP members raised slogans against the government.

It all began when the former Speaker K.G. Bopaiah was presenting his argument over the alleged suicide of Ganapathy.

When the case of another Dy.SP who allegedly committed suicide, Kallappa Handibag, came up in the course of the discussion, Mr. Rai said he knew “the story of the deceased DySP.”

The BJP then demanded a statement from Mr. Rai on “the truth” the Minister knew. When the situation became completely very unruly, Mr. Koliwad adjourned the House.
