The Terry Fox Run is coming back to the city after a long hiatus of six years. The run is a charity event aimed at raising funds for research on cancer. Terry Fox Run Bangalore 2011, a four kilometre-long run with the punch line “Marathon for Hope”, will be held on September 18.

Flagging off the event will be Kannada actor Ramesh Aravind and Canadian Consul General Shaun Wedick. Sportspersons Pankaj Advani and Rohan Boppana will be present.

The event is named after young Canadian Terry Fox, who was diagnosed with bone cancer when he was 18 years old and had to have his right leg amputated above the knee. While in the hospital, Terry was so moved by the suffering of cancer patients that he decided to run across Canada to help raise funds for cancer research.

The 22-year-old cancer survivor, Nitin Tolani, a Dubai-based man of Bangalore ancestry who returned to Bangalore for his treatment, is instrumental in bringing the event back to the city. He said that his involvement with this unique event is his small way of giving back to this city and appreciated Bangaloreans who had come out of their way to extend their support for the campaign.

‘Fun run'

According to Anu Monga, chairperson of the Terry Fox Run Committee, over 2,000 students from 35 various schools from in and around Bangalore are expected to participate in this event. Apart from that, over 3,000 people from different walks of life are also expected to join the campaign.

Called as a “fun run”, participants in the Terry Fox Run can use any non-motorised form of mobility — walking, running, cycling, skating and rally around the twin causes of cancer prevention and awareness. All participants will get a certificate irrespective of the distance they cover. The funds collected will be donated to the Tata Memorial Centre to further boost their cancer research programmes. The spot registration will be at 8 a.m. on September 18, and the run will start at 9 a.m. from Shree Kanteerava Indoor Stadium on Cubbon Road.

If you are unable to attend the run but wish to donate, cheques can be made payable to: “Tata Memorial Centre, Mumbai” . All donations paid are tax free.
