Want to see the splendour of Hyderabad’s historic Charminar without travelling there? Just head to the 39th annual cake exhibition that is being held at St. Joseph’s Indian High School grounds on Vittal Mallya Road till the end of the month.

The cake model of the Charminar, which is 18-foot tall, occupies the pride of place at the exhibition. C. Ramachandran (74), former director of Nilgiris, said that nearly five tonnes of sugar, several kilos of cream and hundreds of eggs have been used to sculpt the masterpiece in cake. It took 40 people nearly 60 days to make the cake, whose total area is 22 sq ft, he said.

A die-hard fan of recently retired cricketer Sachin Tendulkar, Mr. Ramachandran said he has also sculpted a life-size cake statue of the master-blaster. This will shortly be put up on display at the exhibition.

The other models that are on display include a cruise liner, a fashion model and a dragon. A special exhibit is of a cake to commemorate 100 years of Indian cinema.

Another attraction is a rose cake that made up of roses made from cream. The organisers say that the person who correctly guesses the number of roses on the cake will get to take it home after the exhibition. “It was a challenge to decide on the concepts this year,” said Manish Gaur, Director at Institute of Baking and Cake Art. The entry fee for the exhibition, which will be held till December 29, is Rs. 49. It is open between 11 a.m. and 9 p.m.
