The city has seen a series of serious crimes against women. In many cases, the accused are repeat offenders.

In August last year, police arrested 30-year-old Janardhan Chari, who would kidnap minor girls and abuse them before taking away their valuables. The police said 16 cases have been registered in different police stations while Chari confessed to 31 kidnappings. Mohan Kumar, a teacher-turned-serial rapist was arrested on October 21, 2009 after the police intensified the investigation into the mysterious disappearance of a woman identified as Anitha. His arrest helped solve the murders of 21 young women whom he had killed by giving cyanide pills after making them believe it to be contraceptive pills.

Umesh Reddy alias Rajulu alias Ramesh alias Venkatesh, a former constable in the Central Reserve Police Force, was accused of attacking women staying alone. He is from Basappa Malige in Chitradurga district. He was facing four cases in Peenya, one each in Gangammanagudi, Jalahalli and Yeshwanthpur and two in MICO Layout police stations. He was named in cases in Mysore, Davanagere and Hubli-Dharwad in Karnataka, Mumbai and Pune in Maharashtra, Ahmedabad and Vadodara in Gujarat. He was caught in 2002 by the police in Yeshwanthpura on a tip off from an autorickshaw driver.
