A swimming outing for four teenagers took a tragic turn on Sunday after one of them drowned in the Mestripalya lake in Koramangala. The lake had been fenced, but the boys still managed to enter it and take a dip, the police said.

The incident occurred around 2 p.m. The boy is believed to have drowned in a deep section of the lake. He was noticed by a local who informed nearby residents. The Koramangala police were contacted and the boy was pulled out with the assistance of expert swimmers within one hour. However, he was declared brought dead when he was rushed to a hospital.

According to the police, the deceased has been identified as Chintu (15), a resident of a nearby slum. His parents came to the station after the police distributed pictures of the boy in the locality to help identify him. Officials said that the even though the lake had been fenced, there was a section which had been cut open to help locals enter the lake area.

It is suspected that the four boys used the same entrance. The remaining three boys fled from the spot when they realised that their friend was drowning.
