There is nothing new in actors from other language films venturing in to Kannada films, as there is a tradition of film makers opting for artistes from neighbouring film industry. Some artistes, who came to act, have almost become part of Kannada film industry itself.

However, to bring successful artistes and technicians from other languages has now become order of the day. While few film makers opt for female leads of other language films because of their talent, most of the time, it is glamour that matter for them. Some of the film makers are ushering actors, who have succeeded either in neighbouring language films or in Bollywood for doing an item number, which of late has become part of Kannada films.

Even male artists are also venturing in to Kannada films, Jackie Shroff figured in Anna Bond directed by Suri. Ravi Kale and Makarand Deshpande are in lead roles in Dandupalya which will be released on Friday. The comedian of Tamil film industry, Vivek is acting in a Kannada film as villain. According to sources, some film makers are opting for Parthiban and Sharat Kumar for some important roles. Malayalam super star Mammotty acted as protagonist in Shikari directed by Abhay Simha.

The trend reached to its heights when Trishul director of Dirty Picture” Silk Sakkat Maga opted for Pakistani actor Veena Malik, who made a name in Bollywood recently. She is now doing role of Silk Smitha, what Vidya Balan had popularised in recent block buster Dirty picture, which got her National Award.

Prem of Jogi and Jogayya fame is trying to rope in Sunny Leone for his ambitious venture Prem’s Adda. Prem said that, he approached the actor, who is in news for her role in Pooja Bhat’s Jism-2. Prem initially approached Bipasha Basu for the role. But he had to drop the idea because of her busy commitments. “We are particular about having Sunny Leone for a special song”, says Prem.

It is not the first time Sandalwood opting for Bollywood stars. Mallika Sheravat of Murder did a song in Preethi Yeke Bhoomi Melide of Prem and Yana Gupta followed her in his Jogi. Rakhi Sawanth figured in Geleya, choreographer Harsha’s debut film. Shilpa Shetty appeared in Ravichandran’s Preetsod Tappa, Nayanatara entertained the audience in Super of Upendra and likely to appear in Bachchan. Nisha Kothari acted in Raj-the Showman, Sameera Reddy is figuring in Varadanayaka of Kichcha Sudeep and Shreya Sharan is playing an important role in Chandra of Roopa Iyer .

Shreya Sharan says, she accepted offer of Roopa Iyer because of the potential of the character. “The character has emotional and realistic touch, besides I am impressed by the home work done by Roopa Iyer” she said. Incidentally Roopa Iyer is daughter of noted director G.V. Iyer of Sanskrit films fame.

According to Munirathna President Karnataka Film Producers Association (KFPA), the trend is not new to Sandalwood, as artists from the neighbouring languages sharing the screen with Kannada heroes from the past three decades. “However, bringing Bollywood actors for a song is acceptable, but not for lead roles. We should favour talents of Kannada, as it helps in identifying with them”, says Munirathna who cast Ramya for his recent release Katari Veera Surasundarangi.
