The flames of bright green, orange, white and blue candles that were lit to remember those who died fighting for the nation continued to burn as emotions ran high during Smarananjali here on Sunday.
Smarananjali was a tribute in the form of various song and dance programmes organised jointly by Doordarshan Kendra, Bangalore, All India Radio, Raj Bhavan, Sainik Welfare and Resettlement, the State government and the State Bank of Mysore.
Speaking at the event, retired Brigadier V.A.M. Hussain said that there was a shortage of men in the armed forces.
“People need to understand that not only IT jobs are important but also those in the armed forces,” he said.
Lauded
Meanwhile, Governor H.R. Bhardwaj lauded the efforts of the armed forces . He said that he had heard tales of sacrifice that are extremely inspiring. He also said that Karnataka had produced some outstanding soldiers.

Balavva, wife of late gunner Ashok Myannavar, Subhashini Vasanth, wife of late Col. V. Vasanth, and Bina Thomas, wife of Col. Jojohn Thomas, were given awards. Sepoy Yellappa Goudar, who sustained injuries during Operation Rhino, was felicitated.
