The decision by the high-powered committee to realign Namma Metro’s Phase II near Jayadeva hospital, which will end up demolishing the BTM Layout flyover, has drawn ire from various quarters, including the government.

City in-charge and Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy on Wednesday told The Hindu , “The flyover was built by the BDA and no official intimation about this (demolish flyover) has come to the government so far. I have asked them to go underground. All options will be considered before the government takes a decision… it will not be unilateral.”

Expressing ignorance about the decision, Jayanagar MLA B.N. Vijaykumar wants comprehensive development instead of demolition of flyovers. “So many proposals have been made for that particular corridor … When I met the (BMRCL) Managing Director a month ago, I was told that residents would be consulted. This has not happened,” Mr. Vijaykumar said.

The flyover, according to traffic police, is integral to regulate traffic in the area. Vehicular movement will be affected if the 10-year-old flyover is demolished.

BMRCL MD Pradeep Singh Kharola declined to comment citing the model code of conduct.
