Syces (stable attendants) of the Bangalore Turf Club staged a demonstration in front of the club office on Saturday.

The president of the Syces Welfare Association, S Balan, said there 400 syces were taking care of around 1,000 horses. “100 syces do not get earned leave, casual leave or medical benefits. There is no job security for them and they are hired and fired at will,” he added. Mr. Balan said that a meeting was held between the management and the union on June 3. The management had agreed to pay the syces their arrears, but the latter claimed that they had not been paid.

Besides syces other workers also participated in the protest. At noon, the protest was withdrawn after the management agreed to settle the issue at a meeting on October 9.
