Submit number of registered labourers: HC tells BMRCL

The Karnataka High Court on Monday asked the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation (BMRCL) to submit the number of labourers, employed for the Namma Metro project, who are registered as per the law as on March 31, 2014 for availing welfare benefits as per the Building and Other Construction Workers Act, 1996.

A Division Bench comprising Chief Justice D.H. Waghela and Justice B.V. Nagarathna issued the direction while hearing a public interest litigation petition pertaining to poor working conditions of the engaged by contractors, who are entrusted with construction of different phases of the project.

During the hearing, the counsel for BMRCL told the court that out of 4,481 labourers, 92 per cent have been registered as per the law or were in the process of being registered as on January 31.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Labour submitted reports on inspection of construction sites of various contractors as directed by the court earlier.

While adjourning the hearing, the Bench also asked the contractors to provide details on implementation of welfare schemes provided under various labour laws with respect to the labourers engaged by them.
