Vijayanagar police station Sub-inspector attempts suicide, saved by colleague

Police launch investigation into what pushed her to take the step

A 32-year-old sub-inspector attempted suicide by overdosing on 23 over-the-counter pills on Tuesday afternoon while on duty at Vijayanagar police station. Roopa Tambad then left the office to her apartment at the police quarters, also in Vijayanagar. On reaching her home, she collapsed at the entrance.

Fortunately, a colleague who had suspected something amiss, had followed her and saw her fall down. She was taken to a private hospital where doctors are trying to save her life. She is in intensive care.

Her attempt comes in the wake of suicides by two police officers in other parts of Karnataka in July.

Two senior police officers rushed to the hospital and later went to the station to probe what had pushed her to take the extreme step.

Initial inquiries revealed that Roopa had been pulled up by a senior in connection with a case she was handling. According to colleagues, she had also been pulled up for misusing a seized mobile phone. "The inspector (Sanjeev Gowda) had written an adverse note about it,” said a colleague.

The inspector was questioned and his statement was recorded. It may be recalled that Inspector Sanjeev Gowda had been suspended for dereliction of duty following the brutal murder of a realtor in a coffee shop in broad day light. He had been reinstated three days ago.
