The tussle between Bangalore University (BU) and Bengaluru Central University (BCU) for possession of the Prasanna Kumar block and the physics block in the Central College campus is likely to have an impact on the fate of 3.5 lakh students.

Evaluation of answerscripts of the undergraduate exams of BU has been scheduled to take place in these blocks from May 26. The process is expected to be completed either in June-end or July first week.

S. Japhet, Vice Chancellor of BCU, said both the blocks belong to the BCU. “We have written to Bangalore University to vacate the premises immediately as we have to undertake repairs in the physics block and have to start new departments for the coming academic year that begins in June in the Prasanna Kumar block,” he said.

Prof. Japhet said that while the Kori committee report had stated that BCU will get 65 acres in and around Central College, a survey by BCU had revealed that only 44 acres are available. The parent Bangalore University had leased out land to 12 organisations, including several government ones. “We have written to the Higher Education Department to take up the matters with the appropriate authorities and ensure that this land is given back to BCU,” he said.

C. Shivaraju, Registrar (Evaluation) of BU, said that evaluation of answerscripts of the 3.5 lakh students who appeared for the examinations will begin on May 26. As many as 22 lakh answerscripts have been kept in the Central College campus and the BU vice chancellor has given permission to conduct valuation on the premises. As many as 4,000 evaluators will report for duty in nine units set up in the Prasanna Kumar block and the physics block. Scanning of the answerscripts began on Tuesday.
