With the increase in reports of sexual assaults in schools, the Home Department has decided to launch a Student Police Corps programme in high schools of Bengaluru to instil discipline and respect for the law among students.
Home Minister K.J. George told presspersons here on Tuesday that the pilot project would involve the police visiting schools one or two days in a week and training students in traffic rules, investigation, and other aspects of policing.
Students would also be brought to the police station to make them familiar with their functioning, he said.
The project would enable schools to create a safe environment and repose confidence in the youth to react against social evils and find solutions to problems.
A police officer in the Additional Director-General of Police rank had been given the responsibility of identifying schools and formulating the programme, the Minister added.
Safety guidelines
Mr. George said a committee headed by Additional Chief Secretary V. Umesh was fine-tuning the school guidelines issued to prevent sexual abuse and they would be approved at the Cabinet meeting in Kalaburagi on November 28.
