A disaster response force is expected to be functional in the State by 2015 with four companies being raised in Bangalore, Mangalore, Belgaum and Gulbarga.
Deputy Inspector-General (Fire and Emergency Services) M Chandrashekhar said the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) was sanctioned by the government on June 14. Its four companies would comprise 127 personnel.
He was speaking at the ‘Disaster management integration seminar 2013’ here on Wednesday, organised by the Madras Engineering Group and Centre in coordination with the NDMA, SDMA (Karnataka, Kerala and Lakshadweep and Maldives Islands).
To provide training for these personnel, 20 acres of land in Doddaballapur, eight acres in Gulbarga and 6.5 acres in Karkala have been identified. The process of acquiring this will begin soon, said DGP and Director-General, Fire and Emergency Services, Om Prakash.
Two advanced high-platform rescue vehicles from Finland have been commissioned to help in disaster management, especially at high-rise buildings.
Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) B. Dayanand said: bomb detection and disposal squad would be set up in Mangalore, Hubli, Dharwad and Gulbarga.
