Passport-Visa fraud: Special team from U.S. consulate arrives

A special team from US Consulate General, Chennai is in the city to assist the police in their probe into the suspected child trafficking racket that was busted on Monday.

P. Harisekharan, additional commissioner of police (East), who is leading the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the case, said, “The British consulate is also in touch with us though we have not come across any case of children smuggled to the U.K.”

Mr. Harisekharan said that hey were recording the voluntary statements of all the suspects and would proceed for search and seizure in search of corroborative evidence from Wednesday. “We are now in possession of more information on others who may be involved. More arrests are likely,” he said.

The city police on Tuesday produced all the 16 arrested persons in a local court, which remanded them into 14-day police custody.
