Flyovers, which are meant to be a solution to the city’s traffic problems, appear to be the answer to the lack of designated spaces for waste disposal.
A classic example is the flyover that begins on Old Madras Road near Benniganahalli, connecting Hebbal.
Piles of construction debris have been dumped under it and in between the Namma Metro’s pillars.
While portions of it near the Central Business District have been beautified with plants, the remaining stretches continue to be an eyesore with people using them to dump garbage.
Mayor B.S. Satyanarayana expressed his helplessness and said that no one was keeping a check on it. “It causes huge loss to the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) as we have to ultimately clear the garbage and debris and this involves deploying people and trucks,” he said.
The BBMP is planning to invite private parties to adopt these spaces. Mr. Satyanarayana said some parties had shown interest in the proposal, which allows them to beautify the spaces below flyovers.
They will, in turn, be given advertising rights, he said.
